The Christmas season brings a fun opportunity to make homemade ornaments, and here’s a unique way to make one using a mini charcuterie board from Hobby Lobby, some Designer Series Paper (DSP), and faux greenery from the Dollar Tree. Let’s have some fun!
Surprisingly, a mini charcuterie board can be repurposed into charming ornaments. You can also use this for a shelf sitter or a tiered tray, but here I made it into a tree ornament. These petite boards, often seen as platters for snacks, come in various textures like wood, metal, or slate. Their small size makes them perfect for creating unique and rustic ornaments, adding a touch of whimsy to your holiday décor. This one was from the Spring collection at Hobby Lobby, but I also saw the exact same boards there right now for the Christmas season. So, run out and grab a couple before they’re gone!

The first thing I did was give the main portion of the board a nice coating of Mod Podge. Make sure you use enough for the DSP to stick to it, but not so much that your paper becomes soggy. I used a foam brush to spread it on, and then immediately stuck on my DSP. This paper design is from the Let’s Go Fishing paper pack, and I love this stripe because it looks monochromatic. Perfect for a rustic look for this ornament!
Next, I used a sanding sponge to sand off the excess paper that hung over the edge. It doesn’t take much effort to do this step, and it’s necessary so that your finished product looks more professional. This particular sanding sponge was from the Dollar Tree.
The focal point of this ornament is a wooden laser-cut ornament that I found in a pack of 5 from Hobby Lobby. I used my Waverly Antique Wax to stain it a darker brown (you can find this at Walmart), instead of leaving it the natural wood color. After it was stained and dry, I used my hot glue gun to adhere it to the ornament, centered in the middle.
The faux greenery was the next item I used to decorate my ornament, and these two sprigs were from the Dollar Tree. The sparkly glitter and faux berries add a festive feel, and greenery always gives your home décor a perfect, natural touch. I hot glued the stems to the top of the board, and then used some jute twine to wrap around the stems several times before tying a knot.
The final touch was adding a few rusted bells that I found in my crafting stash, and I attached them with some of our Poppy Parade Baker’s Twine. I love this touch, because it looks like a candy cane! It really gave the ornament a cute, Christmassy vibe.
Here are a few other boards that I made using the same technique, just using different DSP. Which one do you like the best?
Crafting your own homemade ornaments is not just about decorating; it’s about the joy of creating something unique for your own home, or even for a gift! I hope you love this idea, and give it a try yourself.
